Envisioning community…living in harmony with nature

The Balfour Village began with a vision of a place where community and the environment could thrive. A design charrette in January, 2005 started the master planning phase of Balfour Village, a planned unit development in Whatcom County. Experts in low impact development and sustainable community design led a workshop helping to implement features within the design that foster smart growth and environmentally friendly development techniques. By integrating residential, commercial, and natural space with principles and values the Balfour Village has been designed as Whatcom County’s first “sustainable community.”

Nestled in the foothills of Mount Baker in the beautiful Columbia Valley, Balfour Village is located in the urban center of eastern Whatcom County and moments from the North Cascades. This unique location will provide residences with all the amenities, from convenient shopping and services to recreational and aesthetic opportunities.

Vision

The vision for Balfour Village is to create a community-friendly, environmentally friendly development that will serve as a model for future land development. This model prioritizes practices that reduce environmental impacts and enhance quality of life. To that end, principles have guided the design and planning for Balfour Village.
